Old Overholt Review

Old Overholt, rooted in American whiskey history, traces its origins back to Abraham Overholt, a prominent figure in the 19th-century distilling scene. The brand’s rich legacy spans generations, and its commitment to crafting quality rye whiskey has stood the test of time.

The Old Overholt Bonded edition, aged for a minimum of four years, presents a robust and well-balanced profile. Its nose is characterized by a delightful combination of vanilla, oak, and a subtle hint of spice. On the palate, the 100 proof offers a bold expression with notes of caramel, pepper, and a lingering warmth that captivates the senses.

Stepping up in age, the Old Overholt 11 Year provides a more mature and complex experience. The extended aging period imparts a deep amber hue and enhances the whiskey’s depth. The nose boasts a harmonious blend of toasted oak, dried fruits, and a touch of leather. With a velvety texture, the palate unfolds layers of caramel, cinnamon, and a lingering sweetness, making it a contemplative sipper.

In comparison, the Old Overholt Straight Rye, without an age statement, holds its own unique charm. Its younger age contributes to a brighter, livelier character. The nose introduces vibrant citrus notes alongside classic rye spiciness. The palate is lively with a peppery kick, complemented by hints of apple and vanilla, creating a refreshing and accessible rye expression.

When considering the trio, the Old Overholt 11 Year stands out as the connoisseur’s choice, delivering a sophisticated and nuanced drinking experience. The extended aging process brings forth a depth of flavors that elevates it above its counterparts. While the Bonded edition offers a robust option and the Straight Rye provides a more youthful and approachable profile, the 11 Year strikes a perfect balance that is likely to appeal to a broad range of whiskey enthusiasts.

Personally I have never had the opportunity to partake in the Old Overholt Bottled-in-bond expression so it’s not included in this review, but once I do, expect another Overholt assessment.  I do however have the Old Overholt 114 in my collection (not pictured).

Old Overholt 114 Proof offers a bold and robust experience, surpassing the standard Bonded expression. The higher proof enhances the rye’s spiciness, providing a more intense flavor profile. Compared to the 11 Year, it may lack some of the nuanced complexities, but its straightforward, powerful kick appeals to those seeking a punchier sip. Both the Bonded and 11 Year versions exhibit smoother transitions and intricate layers, making them preferable for those who appreciate a more refined and aged whiskey.
